Canon Europe has launched its latest flagship cameras, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, aiming to revolutionize professional photography and videography. This launch event highlighted the cameras’ advanced capabilities, driven by the new Accelerated Capture imaging platform and Deep Learning technologies. Yours truly was invited to attend the launch and this is what I found out.

EOS R1: For Elite Professionals
The EOS R1, the first in the EOS R range within the EOS-1 series, is designed for sports and news photographers. Its standout feature is the new Cross-Type AF system, which excels in tracking subjects even through obstacles. With a 24.2-megapixel resolution, the EOS R1 offers a silent electronic shutter at 40fps, capturing every crucial moment. It also supports pre-continuous shooting, capturing up to 20 frames before the shutter is pressed.

The camera’s hybrid functionality includes 6K resolution at 60fps, 4K at 120fps, and Full HD at 240fps, making it a powerful tool for multimedia production. Its weather-resistant body, integrated vertical grip, and two-stage AF-ON button ensure durability and quick adjustments during fast-paced action.

EOS R5 Mark II: Versatility for Creatives

The EOS R5 Mark II builds on the success of the EOS R5, enhancing features for hybrid professionals. It features a new back-illuminated, stacked sensor with a 45-megapixel resolution and an electronic shutter capable of 30fps. Its pre-continuous shooting mode captures 15 frames before the shutter is pressed, and advanced image upscaling achieves up to 180 megapixels.

For videographers, the EOS R5 Mark II offers 8K 60p resolution and 12-bit RAW recording internally, along with 4K video at up to 120p with sound. The new Cooling Fan Grip extends shooting periods, ideal for events and live streaming. Enhanced post-production workflows include video proxies and structured folders. Its new LP-E6P battery and durable magnesium alloy body ensure reliability, while the brighter viewfinder enhances usability.
