FIAT, one of the longest-standing automotive brands in the world, has just marked its 125th anniversary with a grand event dubbed “Smiling to the Future” at the iconic Lingotto building in Turin. This milestone not only commemorates FIAT’s rich history but also heralds a bright future under the Stellantis umbrella. The event was a delightful blend of retrospection and innovation, bringing together dignitaries, industry leaders, and automotive enthusiasts to celebrate the legacy and future of FIAT.

Founded on July 11, 1899, FIAT has been a cornerstone of the automotive industry, renowned for its commitment to innovation and style. The brand’s journey from the early days of the Società Anonima Fabbrica Italiana di Automobili – Torino to becoming a global automotive giant is a testament to its enduring appeal and adaptability.

In Ghana, FIAT was a household name from the 1970s to the early 1990s, with models like the Fiat 500, Tipo, Panda and Brava becoming beloved family cars. I remember very well school runs in my Dad’s Fiat 132 we dubbed “blue Fiat”.

My “big brother” now Bishop Koffy Oko-Adjei had a Fiat 127 which proved to be simple and resilient, all it needed was a curiously disassembled pair of scissors to tune its carbs and keep it running.

The Fiat Campagnola, too, earned a special place in Ghanaian history as a military vehicle used extensively for “operations” during the turbulent 1980s.

Despite its decline in popularity due to the rise of Asian automakers, FIAT remains a symbol of resilience and quality in the memories of many Ghanaians.

The anniversary celebration at Lingotto was a fitting tribute to FIAT’s storied past and promising future. The highlight was the unveiling of the Fiat 500e Giorgio Armani and the Fiat Grande Panda, showcasing FIAT’s dedication to combining Italian design excellence with cutting-edge technology.

The Fiat 500e Giorgio Armani is a stunning limited edition that marries the elegance of Giorgio Armani with the sustainability of electric mobility. With its meticulous design and luxurious features, this model represents the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship.

On the other hand, the Fiat Grande Panda marks FIAT’s return to the global mainstream market.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic Panda of the 1980s, the Grande Panda is designed to be an affordable, family-friendly vehicle that embodies the values of simplicity, sustainability, and beauty. Its innovative features, such as an integrated spiral charging cable, make it a standout in the B-segment.

The celebrations also saw the opening of the new Casa FIAT exhibition at the Pinacoteca Agnelli. This interactive display traces the brand’s history and its deep connection to the Lingotto building, offering visitors an immersive journey through FIAT’s evolution. From the production of iconic models like the Fiat Nuova 500 and the Fiat Panda to the latest innovations, the exhibition underscores FIAT’s commitment to preserving its heritage while looking boldly into the future.

As FIAT celebrates its 125th anniversary, it is clear that the brand is not resting on its laurels. With a renewed focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, FIAT is poised to continue its legacy of providing stylish, practical, and affordable vehicles to customers around the world. The “Smiling to the Future” event was not just a celebration of the past, but a declaration of FIAT’s vision for the future—a future where the brand continues to make its mark on the automotive world.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stallantis

In a speech at the event Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO Said; Fiat is a long love story of resilience, Fiat survived through different legal entities, through different political regimes, and through different wars, Fiat always comes out stronger”. He extolled the achievements of Fiat amongst the Stellantis family and paid tribute to Fiat workers.

In conclusion, FIAT’s 125th anniversary was a joyous occasion that blended nostalgia with optimism. It celebrated the brand’s rich heritage while setting the stage for a future filled with promise and innovation. As FIAT looks forward to the next 125 years, one thing is certain: it will continue to bring smiles to the faces of its customers worldwide.
